2013 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
2013 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
Sonoma Valley
VINEYARD: Originally planted in 1979 by Ed Durell, this famous 135-acre vineyard is located in the southwestern foothills of the Sonoma Valley - north of the San Pablo Bay and east of the Petaluma Wind Gap - where conditions are moderated, making it ideal for Chardonnay. The rocky, volcanic soils at Durell Vineyard create a challenging environment for the vines’ root system, yielding very small grape clusters that have tremendous concentration and power.
TASTING NOTES: The expressive nose exudes aromas of white pear, hazelnut, tangerine, acacia blossom and a kiss of lightly toasted oak. The palate is powerful and bright, with precision and linearity on entry, then unfolds into a multi-layered assortment off lavors reminiscent of limestone, succulent ripe peach and lemon curd. This wine is superbly textured and resonates on the palate with perfectly focused acidity before fanning out into a rich and tender, honeyed finish. This is one of the more unctuous wines in our Chardonnay lineup.

SITE DESCRIPTION
Durell Vineyard is situated on a 200-acre lot that bisects the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros AVAs. The Pacific Ocean is just 30 miles to the west, the northern stretches of San Francisco Bay 10 miles south, and a 2400-foot mountain range hovers immediately north. The site is in a cold, wet spot, with hard, rocky, clay soil and is planted to old Wente selection, all of which contribute to very low yields and intense, concentrated fruit flavors with lower acidity than many of the Russian River Valley Chardonnays. The rocky soil of Durell is derived from volcanic parent material known as basalt, which has a low concentration of magnesium but very rich in minerals, ideal for cultivating premium luxury-brand grapes. The gentle slopes of Durell sit on the very interface of the valley floor and the higher coastal hill country. Durell gets the last bit of fog that clings to the hills before it dissipates over the remainder of the valley. Conversely, as a benefit, the vineyard gets some of the warmth and heat from the valley floor in the same exact areas. This combination of cool mornings, breezy afternoons and warmer days through the summer months are the best conditions for steady ripening.

#6 on Top 100 Cellar Selections. "To tame Durell is no easy feat—indeed at first this wine exudes matchstick and robustness on the nose and palate. But tameness comes in the form of lemon and grapefruit pith, brightening the load, with a sinewy structure supporting its core. The finish is succulent in honey and stone. Drink now through 2020."  — V.B., December 2015

International Wine Review
"The Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is straw gold in color and displays ripe aromas of stone fruit with hints of wood spice. It is big and full on the palate with dense fruit flavors and excellent acid balance. Although the flavors are ripe, the wine overall is fresh and clean." – September 2015

The Wine Advocate
"The 2013 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard has a light-gold color, nice white peach and honeysuckle notes, good crisp acidity, judicious use of oak and a nice long finish. It is fresh, young, vigorous and capable of lasting 7-8 years, possibly a lot longer." – R.P., March 2016
