VINEYARD: About five miles from our winery the 162-acre Rochioli Vineyard was originally purchased in 1938 by Joe Rochioli, Sr, and the vision of growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay was carried out by Joe Jr. after his father’s passing in 1966. The majority of this blend comes from the River Block clone 5, planted in 1989. The balance comes from the Mid-40s Block, a field selection planted in 1993, and Allen Block 1, clone 15, planted in 1995.
TASTING NOTES: This Chardonnay is sumptuous and rich, yet poised and nervy. There is great balance between warm, opulent fruit and tangy, citrus spice. Yellow peach, honey and lemon tempt the senses. The first sip opens with ebullient fruit flavors of white currant and tart apricot, followed by warm, toasted brioche. The characteristic Rochioli richness is nicely framed by wood spice and creamy oak, but simultaneously balanced by the citrus-dominated profile. A mineral backbone gives the wine ample structure and is accentuated by firm acidity that carries through to a long, persistent, tangy finish.

The Rochioli Vineyard consists of approximately 128 planted acres, of which half is planted to various clones of Pinot Noir. The oldest vines are in the East Block, planted in 1968 and the West Block, planted in 1970, the East Block having the first ever Pinot Noir plantings in the Russian River Valley. At a time when Pinot Noir was almost unknown here in the Russian River Valley, Joe Rochioli Jr. was ahead of his time in selecting the Pommardclone for these initial plantings. The West Block is often referred to as the “mother block” since cuttings from this block were used for several other blocks on the Rochioli property, including the Allen Vineyard. Diverse soil properties, coupled with cool coastal influences, provide ideal conditions for grape growing and reflect the special character of the Rissian River Valley. Some of the oldest vines have been nurtured by three generations of the Rochioli family. Each clone and field selection has been carefully chosen to take advantage of soil type, elevation and exposure to the sun. The resulting grapes possess wonderful fruit flavors, with balanced acidity and tannin.
Pinot Noir: Vibrant fruit flavors with balanced acidity and tannin; notably elegant. Chardonnay: Notably pure, fresh and transparent – with juicy stone fruit and tropical tones.
"The 2013 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is another big-time winner with notes of flinty, wet rocks, distinct minerality, notes of lemon oil, tangerine skin, white currant and possibly a touch of white peach. It is medium to full-bodied and really does taste something like a Chevalier-Montrachet, or even a Montrachet, as hard as that may be for Francophiles to believe. The finish is long, impressive and the wine truly grandiose in its depth and richness. Drink now-2023." – R.P., March 2016
Cellar Selection. "An intensity of petrol-like oakiness on the nose of this wine suggests a youthful coiling that's yet to unravel. Still, plenty of promise is revealed, from robust yet floral elements of golden apple and honey to the effusive back notes of peach. Medium bodied, it finishes crisp and creamy, an expert combination of strength and elegance." – V.B., December 2015
