2014 Bacigalupi Vineyard Pinot Noir
2014 Bacigalupi Vineyard Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley
VINEYARD: In 1956, Helen and Charles Bacigalupi purchased 121 acres of prime vineyard land along Westside Road in the heart of Russian River Valley. And, in 1964, they were among the first in the area to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Bacigalupi family grapes garnered fame in 1976 when they were used to make Chateau Montelena’s winning entry in that year’s Paris Tasting. Our Pinot Noir grapes for this release came from one of the newer vineyards called Frost Ranch, located just across the road from the original plantings. The ranch was purchased by the Bacigalupi family in 1993 and Block 9 is planted entirely to Wente selection Pinot Noir, which produces a classically elegant Russian River Pinot Noir.

TASTING NOTES: This is one of the more savory Pinot Noirs in our lineup, with enticing aromas of spice, black tea and smoked meats that make your mouth water for the flavors of shiitake mushroom and cherry cola to come. Subtle oak and vanilla tones introduce a wellrounded and complex finish that lingers long after the last sip.

SITE DESCRIPTION
In 1956 Helen and Charles Bacigalupi purchased 121 acres of prime vineyard land and in 1964 they were one of the first in the Russian River Valley to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Bacigalupi family grapes garnered fame in 1976 when they were used to make Chateau Montelena’s winning entry in that year’s Paris Tasting. The oldest vines on the property were planted in 1967 on St. George rootstock and are a mix of head-trained and cordon-trained vines. Vine orientation in our blocks is predominantly north/south with east/west exposure.

“From the famous site on Westside Road outside of Healdsburg, this bold red shows orange, dark cherry and pungent earth scents, remaining savory at its core. Medium-bodied and balances with acidity, it takes on a meaty persona seasoned with pepper, clove and black tea” — July 2017

“Medium-light to medium ruby; fragrant, raspberry and cranberry fruit aroma with hints of rose petals, clove, and black tea; medium to medium-full body; tight, herbal, red fruit flavors with bright acidity, a hint of cola, and some rough edges on the finish; medium tannin; lingering aftertaste. Opened and developed with airing in the glass, suggesting the benefit from several more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended.” — March 2017
