2014 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
2014 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
Sonoma Valley
VINEYARD: Originally planted in 1979 by Ed Durell, this famous 135-acre vineyard is located in the southwestern foothills of the Sonoma Valley - north of the San Pablo Bay and east of the Petaluma Wind Gap - where conditions are moderated, making it ideal for Chardonnay. The rocky, volcanic soils at Durell Vineyard create a challenging environment for the vines’ root system, yielding very small grape clusters that have tremendous concentration and power.

TASTING NOTES: Golden Delicious Apple, toasted brioche and crème brulée entice the nose before opening up into a decadent flavors of caramel and toasted almond toffee. The palate is powerful and bright, with richness and body perfectly balanced by a backbone of vibrant acidity.

SITE DESCRIPTION
Durell Vineyard is situated on a 200-acre lot that bisects the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros AVAs. The Pacific Ocean is just 30 miles to the west, the northern stretches of San Francisco Bay 10 miles south, and a 2400-foot mountain range hovers immediately north. The site is in a cold, wet spot, with hard, rocky, clay soil and is planted to old Wente selection, all of which contribute to very low yields and intense, concentrated fruit flavors with lower acidity than many of the Russian River Valley Chardonnays. The rocky soil of Durell is derived from volcanic parent material known as basalt, which has a low concentration of magnesium but very rich in minerals, ideal for cultivating premium luxury-brand grapes. The gentle slopes of Durell sit on the very interface of the valley floor and the higher coastal hill country. Durell gets the last bit of fog that clings to the hills before it dissipates over the remainder of the valley. Conversely, as a benefit, the vineyard gets some of the warmth and heat from the valley floor in the same exact areas. This combination of cool mornings, breezy afternoons and warmer days through the summer months are the best conditions for steady ripening.

The Corkscrewer Report

"A bouquet of sweet honeysuckle, butter, ripe apple and white flowers is a lovely introduction to a Chardonnay so creamy and luxurious. Rounded and with good weight on the body, this is a mellow wine save for the lively acidity of citrus. Just waiting to be paired with a high-end meal involving crustaceans. Striking many aspects of one’s fancy, truly a romantic and intimate wine, likely leading to lofty conversations about dreams, world travel, favorite novels or why no one can make good romantic comedies anymore." — Spring 2017

"From the rocky, volcanic soils of Durell, this white is exuberant in salty rock and sea spray, showing plenty of influence from the Pacific Ocean to its west. Sturdy in structure and length, the fruit is twisted in pink grapefruit and crisp apple, its underbelly a richer, warmers expression of toffee and caramel." — June 2017
